Over the years, the media have often times rightfully lambasted the operations of the Ministry of Sport, the National Sports Commission and individual sporting organisations, but one always seem to escape scrutiny and that is the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA).
In a year that is anticipated to be a busy one, it seems the opportune time to place the GOA under the microscope and have it account to its affiliates and sport aficionados on how it functions.
This year alone, three major international Games are scheduled to be staged starting with the Central American and Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico in July and that is followed by the first Youth Olympics slated for Singapore in August, while bringing up the rear is the Commonwealth Games in India in October.
Judging from all the reports emanating throughout the Region, most of the member countries seem to have already put in focus teams or athletes who boast the best chances of meeting the criterion for selection to compete at these three events and this is aided by the pledged support of their respective Olympic Associations and the Government.
Just to give an example, the Barbados Olympic Association (BOA) already has in its possession a revised budget outlining the cost to cover expenses to attend all three Games and is at present seeking further assistance from the Government.
The first of these three events begin in a matter of six (6) months and so far no release pertaining to our participation has been forthcoming from the GOA as yet, perhaps it is currently in the process of being prepared.
To emphasise its seriousness, the BOA said that since 2009, they had adopted a conservative approach in anticipation of this year’s busy schedule.
This is referred to forward thinking on a scale that is absent in many sports organisations in this country.
However, in an effort not to pre-empt what might or might not be going on within the GOA Kaieteur Sport would like to pose a few questions to the entity to eliminate any lingering misconceptions about its role in sports development.
Here are those questions-
(1) Could the GOA clarify its role in relation to sports in Guyana?
(2) Does the GOA begin the year with a projected budget?
(3) If it does what assistance is given to affiliates at the start of the year to run their programmes and who are they?
(4) Does the GOA solicit Government, National Sports Commission or corporate funding to assist its affiliates?
(5) Does the GOA have a Marketing Committee that goes in search of any shortfall in funding?
(6) If it does have such an arm, highlight some of the fund raising initiatives or programmes it has undertaken?
(7) In terms of international competitions, has the GOA decided which ones will take priority so to give this country the best chance of securing medals?
(8) What is the current state of affairs in relation to the long touted GOA Headquarters?
