Police are currently probing a $1M heist that occurred mid-December last year at the Guyana Teachers’ Union but are still to make any arrests.
Yesterday, Coretta McDonald, the General Secretary, confirmed the break in but expressed disappointment at the pace with which the investigation is proceeding.
So far, according to McDonald, the belief that it was an inside job has not been ruled out.
The General Secretary explained that substantial amounts of cash are not usually kept at the Union headquarters. She added that the missing money remained following a General Council meeting where disbursements are made but many persons did not show up.
The monies also included bursary awards, as well as monies owed to taxi services among others.
According to McDonald, the COPS Security Guard did hear a rumbling in the building in the wee hours of the morning but did not pay much heed to it given that hearing rats rumbling in the ceiling was a common occurrence. It was not until the following morning that the money was discovered missing from the locked drawer where it was placed for safe-keeping.
