Reigon Two Chairman Alli Baksh is appealing to rice farmers between Anna Regina and New Road in the north of the Essequibo Coast to co-operate with the Regional Administration and wait on gravity flow to flood their fields with irrigation water.
Mr. Baksh said that it is costing the administration millions of dollars per day to pump water from Pomeroon River through Dawa Pump Station at Tapakuma to irrigate rice lands in the severe El Nino weather conditions.
The chairman complained that farmers are using tractor-driven pumps to extract water from drainage and irrigation canals into their fields. He noted that when that happens it is preventing the water from rising to the desired level and fields will not be able to be irrigated by gravity flow.
Mr. Baksh said that farmers should not tamper or interfere with Government drainage and irrigation structures.
