Dear Editor,
I am driven to respond to the column written by none other than the social commentator and gentleman, the brilliant Mr. Frederick Kissoon, who not seeing the people at Velvet Revolution, declare in the Kaieteur News publication on the 30th December 2009, “Guyana’s cruelties will continue in 2010″, because we are a nation of sheep.
Editor, I must disagree, as I am aware of the fact that a fundamental psychological and physiological dependency that identify our kind as human-being is the inbuilt need of “Trust”, that thing which 98 per cent of mankind is endowed with in abundance, the two per cent remainder, are the ones who in the human gene pool, maybe through luck, drew, develop, and transform trust that primary human quality into “SMARTNESS”.
So we, dear Editor, the trusting poor folks of this country or anywhere else are not sheep, anymore than our political and other leaders are shepherds. As a further example let us pay attention to President Barak Obama and his ascension to the Presidency of the beacon of democracy.
Now here at home, we have a young man, but an old President, whose international reputation is glorified, but in this country his penchant for draconian action and economical procrastination is seen as reason enough to encourage his entourage to continue their bread and circus daily parade.
People are no sheep, even though many have been butchered. We the simple folks of this resourceful land are simply punch-drunk, and we blab-blab to our own kind, the only listening and understanding ears, and with the absence of hope, we willingly quench our souls’ thirst and physical hunger by attending full-house circuses, and slurp in the comfort of binge, and with nostalgia we abuse our families, friends and dearest ones.
Because of the hatred for our tyrannical independence and political imprisonment, we distrust each other and find solace when driving over dead and wounded animals left on our pathways.
Yet still we the tax payers and uneducated mass are not sheep. It is simple, those who ask us to trust them, for five decades, pay us back with ideological propaganda. It is said that “success” does not make a person good or bad, it just makes him be “more”.
The citizens’ courage is now clothed in fear of judicial discrimination and constitutional violations, “CAN WE OVERCOME”? If not, then we the tormented voting mass of this Republic will further immerse in the perverse game of Russian roulette, until either the visa or graveyards win.
As it is now, our collective apathy is the protection, and if our people are to find political emancipation, then for sure the butchers must lead and shepherd with human considerations, Gorbachev-like statesmanship, mixed with the main ingredient, glasnost and perestroika.
I now end this reasoning, by reminding us all that after fifty years of political experimentation the people believe there is no hope, and like Rome under Nero, sheepish destruction is now the interpretation of freedom, the ultimate result of the strategy called Divide and Rule.
