An 80-year-old pedal cyclist became the country’s latest road fatality yesterday.
The man who was identified as Cyril Haley was struck by a canter truck at the junction of Norton and Chapel Streets in Lodge.
Haley, a former bauxite industry employee in Linden, died a few hours after he was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). The accident occurred at around 11:25 hrs, when the pensioner was attempting to cross Norton Street.
He was struck down by a white canter truck, GHH 9526, the driver of which, picked up the injured man who was in an unconscious state and rushed him to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital.
On arrival, Haley was immediately taken by stretcher into the emergency room where doctors on duty began attending to him. He suffered from massive head injuries and doctors at the institution ordered that a C-T scan be done.
All arrangements had already been finalized for him to be scanned, but the elderly man succumbed around 14:08 hrs.
A framed certificate honouring Haley for 25 years of service to the bauxite industry was found in a bag which the octogenarian was carrying.
At the time of the accident, Haley was neatly attired in a black-checkered shirt, a pair of grey trousers and black shoes and socks.
Meanwhile, the driver of the motor vehicle was taken into custody and is assisting the police with their investigations.
