Following their successful showing at the Diamond Mineral Water Indoor
Festival last month, Hikers got their 2010 campaign off to a solid start with three wins in two days, at the Ventures International Indoor Tournament which is being played in Trinidad and Tobago. The nippy Robert France opened the score in the third minute against SMX of St. Maarten.
France would go on to score three more goals as Hikers handed the Dutch side an 11-3 drubbing at their first showing in the Twin Island Republic.
Hikers struggled to convert their short corner opportunities, but ball wizard Jerazeno Bell still managed to sneak three past the SMX custodian, and added a field goal to take his total to four goals. Alex Gouveia added two and Captain Devin Munroe found the top V to add his name to the score-chart.
The promising Shaquelle Assanah, who made his international club debut at the senior level impressed with crisp first-time passes.
Hikers were back on the court two hours later against a youthful Corona
Fatima of Trinidad, and were never in much danger, leading 5-1 at the half, before closing out the game for a 10-3 win.
Team Captain Devin Munroe opened the scoring in the fourth minute and closed it with a ripper one minute before the final whistle. Shane Samuels squeezed three pass the Fatima goalkeeper, the same as Robert France and Jerazeno Bell, who thrilled the fans with his familiar show-time antics.
Playing at 14:00 hrs yesterday against Queens Park, the effects of travelling the day before and the late night were evident as Hikers struggled to find their form. Some impressive ball distribution from Bell helped the lone Guyanese side to close the first half at 5-2, but Hikers failed to convert some clear opportunities in the second half and lost the initiative to a well rounded Queens Park side. Only some solid goalkeeping from former national goalkeeper Azad DeAbreu managed to save the day as Queens Park crept to within one, before going down 4-5.
Games continue today when Hikers taking on Notre Dame, but Guyana’s
Diamond Mineral Water champions have already secured their place in what promises to be a competitive semi-finals.
