Pulsating action anticipated
Cricket fans can expect several weeks of pulsating softball cricket action following the launching of the Guyana Telephone &Telegraph (GT&T) Inaugural countrywide 10 overs Softball Cricket Competition which gets underway from Saturday February 6 and runs until Sunday March 21.
Over five million dollars in cash and prizes would be up for grabs with the winner carting off One Million dollars. The runner-up receives $250.000 while each team making it to the semi-final stage gets $50.000. Quarter finalists receive $20.000 each while those teams making it to the round of six stages receives $10.000.
Prizes would also be awarded to the best bowler of the competition, best batsman and the man of the match in every game. The tournament coincides with Guyana’s 40th Republic Anniversary and is being run under the auspices of the Guyana Softball League in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
The competition was officially launched in the boardroom of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Main Street, Georgetown, in the presence of the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Dr. Frank Anthony, Director of Youth and Sports, Neil Kumar, GT&T Director of Marketing and Sales Wyston Robertson, Mr. Yog Mahadeo (CFO – GT&T) and other representatives of supporting corporate entities.
These include Guyana Times Newspapers, Gizmos and Gadgets Super Store, Impressions, Cell phone Shack and Survival Sheriff Street Shopping Complex.
Minister Anthony lauded the initiative while commending the work of the GT&T. He pointed out that the tournament was realized through the collaborative work of his Ministry and GT&T. Mr. Anthony intimated that the project complimented the work of his Ministry as it fitted into their plans and projections. “This is a major investment in sports,” the Minister advocated. “It is my wish that this gesture by the GT&T would start an epidemic and we would witness the involvement of other corporate entities in similar initiatives,” Mr. Anthony expounded.
He also alluded to the involvement of women in next year’s tournament. “We had toyed with the idea of women’s involvement in the inaugural tournament but eventually decided to incorporate the females in the second edition of the tournament,” the Minister assured. He then issued a challenge to other corporate entities to get on board.
Mr. Robertson reminded the gathering of his company’s compliance to their social and financial obligations. He pointed out that apart from the huge taxes to the nation’s coffers GT&T was involved in every facet of the society. He further disclosed that apart from the celebratory aspect of the tournament, GT&T viewed the tournament as a process that fosters integration.
“We view softball cricket as a way of fostering integration of the nation,” said Mr. Robertson. “What we actually did was to take the traditional softball cricket game that you played as youngsters and packaged it into a ten/10 competition,” he disclosed. The Director of Marketing and Sales also supported the Minister’s call for the involvement of females in the tournament.
Meanwhile, the vision of the tournament is to foster community involvement in sports and culture and it is open to persons of all dispensations.
The grand finale would be held at the famous Bourda sward and the organizers have promised a Caribbean style entertainment package with music from overseas bands as well as Caribbean style entertainment packages.
