– receive training, equipment
From practically no fire-fighting capabilities residents of Bartica, recently, with the assistance of the Guyana Fire Service, launched an initiative which will now make the community prepared to deal with first response to fires.
Last December, some 20 volunteers including women from the community availed themselves for three weeks of training with members of the Guyana Fire Service to respond to fires.
In addition to the training, the fire service handed over a water pump, hoses and other basic equipment.
At present, all systems have been put in place for the volunteers to quickly respond to fires in the community. The team has been given two vehicles belonging to the Community Policing Group to effect rapid response.
The equipment is currently being housed at the Bartica Regional Office and the keys are accessible at the Bartica Police Station, located next door.
Chief Fire Officer Marlon Gentle said that the basic training which the group received is adequate at this time to deal with rapid response required for fires in the community. He noted that much more is needed, but expressed confidence that in the event of a fire, assistance would be provided in a timely manner.
To further complement their initiative, Barticians are grateful for several hydrants which are strategically placed in the community and are all fully functional. This was proven during a recent test run.
In the meantime, residents are awaiting the completion of a Fire Station which has been in the making for some time now.
