DEAR EDITOR,
In mid-December, the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) announced that it would be terminating its drug distribution scheme with effect from January 1st 2010.
We (pensioners), now have to buy and seek refunds (which would be 80% of the cost). We would have to find 20%.
So, for example, if drugs cost $20,000 a pensioner will effectively have to find $4,000 from his/her meagre pension).
It takes around 3 – 4 weeks to get a refund (sometimes it is posted to your home) but most times you have to check at the office to find out if the voucher is ready. You have to climb to the third floor to collect same. Many pensioners are old and sick people, and climbing those stairs is done with great difficulty and strain.
Claims are to be submitted monthly with prescriptions and medical certificates, then another $3,000 has to be paid to the doctor and one is refunded $500-$700.
Is this how the Government cares for senior citizens of the country?
N.I.S. Pensioner
