Fudadin (111*), Deonarine (63*) share unfinished century stand for nationals
The left-handed pair of Assad Fudadin and Narsingh Deonarine shared in an unfinished 103-run 4th wicket stand after Sewnarine Chattergoon fell 5 short of his ton as the Guyana team reached 302-4 against a Rest Side on the opening day of their 3-day practice match at Bourda yesterday.
After West Indies batsman Travis Dowlin (19) pulled a catch low to forward square leg as medium pacer Chris Barnwell made the break thorough at 32-1, Chattergoon and Fudadin repaired the damage with a 149-run 2nd wicket stand on a flat track and fairly fast outfield before the 28-year-old Chattergoon perished.
The Berbician who last year Captained the West Indies ‘A’ team took advantage of being dropped off spinner Deon Ferrier on 39 and returned to form with solid batting in overcast conditions.
Chattergoon, who averages 33.77 from 63 First-Class matches with 5 centuries, timed the ball sweetly and his confidence increased as his innings progressed.
The left-hander, who has played 4 Tests and 18 ODIs, hit 11 fours and a six from 170 balls before he was trapped leg before to Ferrier at 181-2.
West Indies ODI player Royston Crandon was removed for a duck a run later by the impressive Barnwell as the Ramnaresh Sarwan led Guyana side, who play Trinidad and Tobago from January 15 in their opening match in the regional 4-day tournament in Antigua in the Caribbean’s first ever Day/Night First-Class match, slipped to 182-2.
Vishaul Singh, one of six left-handed batsmen in the Guyana side, never suggested permanence against the short pitched bowling of Barnwell and eventually fended a catch to short leg after making six as the Nationals slipped to 199-4. After the demise of the in-form Singh, who seemed affected by a back injury, the elegant Deonarine joined Fudadin and the Berbice pair batted with authority with 26-year-old Deonarine, who scored a brilliant 82 in the last of his 5 Tests last month against Australia, taking the attack to the bowlers with disdainful stroke play.
While 24-year-old Fudadin, who hit 14 fours and 2 sixes from 182 balls in his undefeated 111, got under the majority of the short balls from the aggressive Barnwell. Deonarine was in a pugnacious mood and his chanceless unbeaten 61 came from just 66 balls with 4 sixes and 3 fours.
Barnwell finished with 3-58 from 16 overs and should have also had Fudadin who was dropped off his bowling on 67 while Ferrier had 1-47 from 15 overs.
Coach Ravindra Seeram said that he was hoping for Royston Crandon and Singh to spend some more time in the middle especially since the pitch was a good one for batting. The former Guyana batsman commended Fudadin and Chattergoon for their batting although he felt that Chattergoon, who has not been in the best of form lately, should have gone on to a century.
“I am pleased that Chattergoon got some runs today and looked good at the crease.
He has been searching for form since the Regional One-Day series and this (innings) should do the world of good for his confidence as we prepare for our first match next weekend,” the 48-year-old Seeram, who scored 3 tons and averaged 35.03 from 41 First-Class matches, said.
Seeram said he was impressed by the work of Barnwell who ‘kept coming at the batsmen’ and bowled aggressively on a flat track.
Manager Carl Moore said Singh is almost fully recovered from a back injury and should be 100% fit by weekend while Sarwan who did not bat yesterday is monitoring ‘a slight niggle’.
Today is the 2nd day of the match and play is scheduled to commence at 10:00hrs.
