-despite begging magistrate for mercy
A youth who snatched a cell phone from a woman was yesterday sentenced to one year in prison by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
Joel Castang, 19, of 55 Blankenburg, West Coast Demerara, stole one LG cell phone from Shazeeda Hoosain on Tuesday.
Castang, who was unrepresented, pleaded guilty to the charge and begged the magistrate to have mercy on him since it was his first time committing a crime.
He then explained that about 12:30 on the day in question he was at the City Mall on Regent Street and was really hungry. He said that he saw the woman with the phone and attempted to snatch it from her hand but gave it back to her immediately.
“Your worship I beg for mercy please. This is the first time this ever occurred. I wouldn’t do it again” Castang added.
Hoosain, who was present in court, recounted the incident. She explained that she was standing on Regent Street at the City Mall with the phone in her right hand when the accused grabbed the phone.
She said that he ran east on Regent Street but was caught by some public spirited citizens who gave chase. She added that he was handed over to the police at Alexander Street.
Police prosecutor Stephen Telford stated that the phone was recovered and is currently lodged at the Alberttown Police Station. He urged the magistrate to give the accused a sentence of six years as the law permits.
However the magistrate instituted a lenient sentence of one year to the accused since he is a first offender.
