Dear Editor,
Guyana first major attendance at an International Basketball Championship occurred in 1971 at the Central American Championship in Caracas, Venezuela. Guyana participation was made possible through the dedicated and hard working President of the then Guyana Basketball Association, Joseph ‘Reds’ Perreira, who also accompanying the team as manager.
The team that represented the Land of Many Waters at that historical championship consisted of only nine players with the versatile Hewley Henry serving as player/Coach. The team also tragically lost Eagles’ Keith Jacques who was stabbed to death just before departure.
Jacques played an integral roll when Guyana won the Triangular Series a year earlier.
Guyana started the 1971 Central American Championship with a loss to host Venezuela 77 to 96 points.
In the second game they gave El Salvador a scare before surrendering 75 to 68, in their third encounter Cuba condemned the Parade Ground Warriors to an ignominious 123 to 46 points defeat, against Puerto Rico, Guyana fought to the end but lost 75 to 51. In their final match against Trinidad & Tobago the land of Many Waters registered its first Central American Championship win with commanding 72 to 51 points victory.
The players that had the honour of representing Guyana at its first major international tournament were:
Ronald Pickering – Captain – Royals
Michael Brusche – Eagles
Winston Joseph – Eagles
Harold Caesar – Mackenzie
Melroy Fitzalbert – Royals
Neville Wiltshire – Royals
Cecil Walters Chin – Eagles
