The police have lifted a restriction that was placed in December on trucks and heavy vehicles using the East Bank Demerara road.
The restriction, which banned the vehicles from Houston to Timehri between 06:00hrs to 11:00hrs daily, had come in for criticism from businesses, truck operators and the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) who said that the measure was too harsh.
Shortly after police traffic ranks pulled over scores of vehicles days before Christmas, a police official had said that the restriction may be reviewed.
The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) had said that in one day alone businesses lost an estimated $30M because of the delays caused by police pulling over the trucks.
In December, police announced new measures to lessen the congestion on the East Bank and make the road there safer.
Under the new restrictions, no motor lorry or heavy duty vehicles is allowed to use the Soesdyke- Linden Highway between 18:00 and 06:00hrs.
Motor lorries, heavy- duty vehicles and minibuses are also banned from parking along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway between the hours of 16: 00 hours and 06: 00hrs.
These two restrictions remain in place.
Additionally, Police Commissioner Henry Greene, had ordered that no motor lorry or heavy duty vehicle should proceed north or south along the East Bank Demerara Public Road, between Houston and Timehri, between the hours of 06: 00 and 11: 00hrs.
President of the GCCI, Chandradat Chintamani, felt that the congestion situation could be eased if there is a “sensible” implementation consultation with the private sector.
The Chamber had suggested that a more realistic time for stopping heavy vehicles would have been in the morning between 07:00hrs and 09:00hrs.
