The Buxton Cricket Club on the East Coast of Demerara celebrates its 13th anniversary with their annually Awards Ceremony and Church Service on Sunday.
The Church Service, scheduled to commence at 08:15hrs, precedes the Awards Ceremony at the Buxton Carl Hooper Cricket Club and former National under-19 Cricketer and present National Footballer Clive Andries will receive the club’s Most Valuable Player of the Year Award.
The 20-year-old Andries last represented Guyana in Cricket during the 2007 West Indies under-19 series in St Kitts and played senior National Football for the Golden Jaguars last year.
The right-hander was the leading batsman in the 2009 East Coast Cricket Board (ECCB) first division President’s Cup competition for Buxton’s senior team and was also the top player in the Buxton United Football Club in 2009.
Andries is expected to participate in both the 20/20 cricket and the Football competitions on Sunday to mark the club’s anniversary and admission to the Sporting activities at the Buxton Community Centre ground is free.
According to founder member and President of the club Esse Peters, all other proceeds from the day’s activities will go towards the fund raising drive for the club’s youth development programme.
The Buxton senior team, their ‘A’ side, Transport Sports Club and LBI will participate in the 20/20 cricket while the 2 Buxton Football team will clash in the feature Football encounter.
Peters said officials from the ECCB are expected to speak at the Awards Ceremony and encouraged the support of the villagers, business community, Government and the cricket board for the club’s cricket activities in 2010.
“We are hoping that we could re-introduce our Academy this year and we look forward to a tremendous year for cricket. We also want to thank all those who supported the club in 2009,” Peters said.
