– assistant supts., inspectors being questioned
The Guyana Police Force is once again being called upon to investigate corruption within its ranks, following the disappearance of $3.4M from the Police Finance Office at Eve Leary.
A police statement said that the theft was discovered at around 09:00 hrs yesterday and that three ranks were in custody. The release added that there was no sign of breakage.
Kaieteur News was told that two assistant superintendents, two inspectors and two sergeants are among those being questioned.
Some of the ranks were still giving statements to investigators up to late yesterday evening.
According to a source, the cash was being kept in a safe, and only a few ranks had access to the keys.
The source said that there have been previous thefts from the Finance Office, but rather than being prosecuted, the perpetrators are made to repay the stolen cash and are transferred.
Just a few months ago, several ranks were placed under close arrest after a break-in at the same location.
However, nothing more was heard of the matter.
