Dear Editor,
Any person or organisation that fights for the betterment of the poor people is classified as communist. Dr. Jagan and the PPP fall into that category. In 1953 the PPP was thrown out of the government by the British claiming that the government was turning the country into a communist state.
In 1964 through a crooked election system Dr. Jagan was not allowed to form the government although the PPP had more votes than any other party. The PNC from 1968 continued to rig elections, thus denying the PPP its rightful place.
JF Kennedy said that it doesn’t matter what is the ideology of a person, if he is elected by a majority in a free democracy then we should respect the people’s choice. Dr. Jagan was elected by a free vote and he should have been allowed to govern.
Rashleigh Jackson, Hamilton Green and Freddie Kissoon are trying to rewrite history by telling the world that the PPP and Dr. Jagan were not cheated out of the government in 1964.
A white paper signed in London by the three political leaders was for election and not to change the election system. The United Kingdom unwritten law stipulates that PR system is undemocratic and they will not allow in it in any part of the British Empire, but England was forced to do the undemocratic thing by forcing the PR system in one of its colonies. This was to make sure that the PPP not form the next government.
The PNC was given $5,000 a month by the US government to upkeep the party and at one time Burnham had ask for $10,000 a month but was refused by the US government. The declassified US document stated that Burnham was also receiving $28,000 a year from the flour mill to finance his party.
Freddie Kissoon in one of his articles said that PR means that any two parties that can muster half of the seats in parliament can form the government.
The question is, when the British changed the election system did they stipulate how the government must be formed or the governor assume that’s how the PR system works. I have never heard or read where two parties with the minority votes form the government.
In Canada the past three governments are minorities and there is no call to change the electoral system. The party with the most seats forms the government and according to opinion polls there will not be a majority government in the near future.
Through the world there is call for a change from the first past the post system to PR but many claim that it is unconstitutional.
The British changed the voting system just to get the PPP out of the government. If this was not cheating then what is cheating. If the first past the post system was not good for one colony how is it good for the rest of the colonies and England. Many other colonies had the same problem and the same system continues up to this day.
Mr. Green claims that in the PNC fought for PR since they were in the opposition. If that is so why is it that after they were out of the government they want to change the system. They now want shared government.
If the PPP which wins and will win over 50 percent of the vote wants the PNC in an inclusive government will that be democratic? I do not think so. If the PNC is talking about democracy then they should ask the people in a referendum if they are in favour of inclusive government.
The PNC knows that they cannot win a free and free election so they are trying anything that can put them in power even if they have to sell their souls like what they did in the sixties.
