A 23-year-old youth (name given) has reportedly confessed to the murder of Patricia Williams, 50, a boat operator, of Parrot Island, Essequibo. Over a week ago the partly nude body of the woman was discovered in a clump of bushes in the area.
A subsequent post mortem examination revealed that the woman was strangled.
According to a reliable source the youth, who is now in police custody, told police that the killing was a way of avenging his father’s death and that he blamed the brother of the deceased.
The youth’s father died over ten years ago in a boat mishap in an interior location in the Essequibo area. The captain of the boat at that time was the dead woman’s brother.
The source said that the youth told investigators that he held this grudge against the Williams family for some time now and Patricia Williams turned out to be the family member that suffered.
In what was a chilling confession to police, the lad explained that he caught up with the now dead woman and others at the Harbour Cove Bar in Bartica where they were all imbibing.
Going on further, the youth said that he had a few ‘joints’ (marijuana), which further exacerbated his confused state of mind.
It is reported that some time around 11:30 on the fatal night, the man, Williams and four others left Bartica for Foulmouth, where they all live. The woman reportedly dropped off the others, which meant that she was left alone with confessed murder in the dead of night on the Essequibo River.
It was at that point that he pounced on Williams throwing her into the river. He told investigators that he plunged into the water, held the woman around the neck and submerged her for some time, until she was lifeless.
The youth said that after he was through, he pulled the woman from the water into some nearby bushes. When quizzed by investigators about the partly nude manner in which the woman was found, he could not explain that. However, investigators suspect that the woman was raped and they took anal and vaginal samples to ascertain this.
The youth told investigators that for days his family hid him in the bushy area aback of the yard, and he only ventured out to have meals and return.
The man was nabbed in a boat on the Essequibo River along with two relatives a few nights ago.
Investigators believe that relatives were looking to whisk the youth into the interior location to avoid prosecution.
However their luck ran out after police were ‘tipped off’ about the plan.
The young man was brought to the city and is expected to be charged shortly. In the meantime Patricia Williams is expected to be buried tomorrow.
