The parents of three teenage boys are calling for an apology from the Guyana Police Force after their teens were force to endure treatments which are normally given to convicted criminal.
Some time around 15:00 hours on Tuesday the three boys, aged 15 and 16, were reportedly riding bicycles along Vlissengen Road when they were stopped by a police patrol car.
According to one of the teen’s father, Pastor Cleveland Davidson, he was only informed that his son was in police custody after seeing a ‘call me request’ to a relative’s phone and called back the number.
Pastor Davidson explained that after relatives learnt that the three boys were in police custody they all went down to the Brickdam Police Station to enquire why the teens were being held.
To his surprise despite identifying himself as one of the teen’s father and the uncle of another, no explanation was given to him.
“The investigating rank did not see it fit to even contact the parents of these children. It was a female rank who probably realized that the boys were innocently picked up who offered to send the ‘call me’ request,” the man added.
The man recalled that when he arrived at the police station and as he was about to enquire why the boys were being held he noticed his son and the other two teenagers being escorted out of the station and being ordered into a vehicle.
At that point Pastor Davidson said still no one sought to tell him what was going on with his son and the other teens.
“So I decided to step in front of my son to enquire…A rank then held onto my broken arm and asked me if I know that it is an offence that I am committing.
I simply told the rank that this boy is a juvenile and that as his parent I should know where they were taking him.”
Nevertheless the teens were shuttled around the city in police vehicle like hardened criminals.
This newspaper was told that the teens were taken to the Diamond Police Station lock-ups but because of the space constraints the station refused to keep them there. They were then taken to the Ruimveldt Station where they were also turned away.
Some time later, the teens were returned to the Brickdam Police Station all in handcuffs and they were left to sit on ‘the bench’ for the entire night.
After endless enquiries by the parents the teen were released early yesterday morning. However, the police kept the cellular phones and the bicycles.
The relatives were eventually informed that the teens were held because the police were investigating a cellular phone snatching incident.
In the meantime the parents of the children are all worried about the damage the incident has caused. One of the boys, every since the ordeal, has been vomiting while the others remain traumatized.
As such the relatives are calling for an apology from the Police since they are all concerned over the way the police go about their job which in many instances has been described as unprofessional.
Given the history the Guyana Police Force has with picking up healthy persons and returning them to their families as wounded persons, many have been calling for the force to act more professionally.
