A police constable and his accomplice were yesterday granted bail on a charge in connection with the recent Crabwood Creek robbery. The police constable, Colin Jonas, and his accomplice, Marvin Samaroo, made their appearance at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Omeana Hamilton.
Samaroo and Jonas were charged with robbery with aggravation. They allegedly robbed businessman Ramesh Kalicharran on December 23. Jonas was represented by attorney at law Kim Kyte while his accomplice was unrepresented.
After listening to the matter both men were granted $300,000 bail each. The men are expected to make their next court appearance on January 21.
The two men reportedly robbed Kalicharran, 53, of Grant 1805, Crabwood Creek of jewellery worth over $100,000 and $400,000 in cash before escaping.
Kaieteur News understands that the ex-cop was held after he was implicated by the serving policeman who was arrested minutes after the robbery. According to reports reaching Kaieteur News, two men, one of whom was later identified as the policeman who is stationed at the Central Police Station, had robbed Kalicharran who was in his shop.
The men had entered under the guise of wanting to buy aerated drinks. However, as Kalicharran was in the process of attending to them, he was handcuffed and ordered to hand over his belongings. The businessman complied after which the men fled.
An alarm was raised and quick action by the police led to two men being held in a motorcar at a roadblock at the No.76 Village Public Road, Corentyne.
The police are still looking for a third suspect in relation to the same robbery.
