Dear Editor,
In the face of the growing financial down turn, we the stallholders of Kitty, Bourda and more particularly La Penitence markets were extremely distraught, when a division of the municipality announced its decision to close the markets on its most busiest business day (Sunday) for their upcoming staff party.
This announcement by the Head of the market (Mr. Brisford) came at a rather difficult time for stallholders, solely by the fact that we rely so heavily on this one day (Sunday) to do any particular selling, because during the week business is rarely done in these markets.
For example, during the week (Mon-Sat), one or two customers would come to shop, owing to the numerous competitions markets now face. But on Sundays (with the exclusion of Stabroek Market), we the stallholders of these various markets found our most prosperous moments at sales. This happens because people, who would normally go to Stabroek Market to shop, resort to these other markets.
Mr. Editor, this decision by the Head of the market (Mr. Brisford), to close its gates on the market’s most busiest day of sales for his staff party (according to what we heard, the announcement was made solely by him since he is the market’s boss), is a gross, and most deep-seated insult to we the stallholders affected by his presumption. And in the face of this outrage, his messengers (revenues) who delivered the announcement, found the grace and prudence to asked us (on his behalf) for groceries, meat and other accessories for the party. Can you believe this Mr. Editor?
The very ones that are mostly affected by this atrocity, he (Mr. Brisford ) is begging for meat and groceries by the hands of his servants.
We as stallholders don’t mind giving them these things, but at least the Head could’ve shown a little consideration to the many inconveniences this venture would bring to bear on the backs of those who depend solely on this one day of sales.
It most be noted also that this decision was made without consulting, or notifying stallholders to know how we feel about this sudden move.
We as stallholders don’t mind a bit the Head is keeping a party for his staff, but what is appalling is that he chooses to do so on the market’s only day of real business, where we get to pay staff and other overhead expenses which we could not have paid during the week due to the slowness in sales.
If stallholders had a say in this declaration, or our opinion was given, surely we would’ve opted for any other days ranging from Monday-Saturday, in which Mr. Brisford could keep his staff party without profoundly disrupting our livelihood, and those of others.
In conclusion, since his party is slated for the first Sunday in January 2010, the stallholders of these various markets who are mostly affected are kindly asking Mr. Brisford, to please rethink his decision on this issue since there is still yet time.
For surely something can be forged between Mr. Brisford and stallholders. For we are not mean people: something can be worked out. And at your request, we are willing to avail ourselves to any compromise.
Aggrieved Stallholders
