Bandits shot a 48-year-old businessman three times and stole his firearm shortly after 11:00 hrs yesterday, after ambushing him at a sand pit he operates at Yarrowkabra, on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
Fazir Basir Mohamed was shot once in the chest and twice in the shoulder by the gunmen, who also relieved the injured man of $100,000, cell phone, car keys and his wallet containing a number of important documents.
Mohamed was treated at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). He was still undergoing surgery up to late yesterday evening.
The sand pit which Mohamed operates is located a short distance from the Splashmin’s Resort and Fun-Park.
His son, Faraz Mohamed, yesterday told this newspaper that bandits pounced on his father shortly after 11:00hrs. He said that his father told him that he was sitting in the front seat of his vehicle when the bandits pulled up in a silver grey Toyota 212. The son was a short distance away with other employees.
The man said that his father told him that the same vehicle had passed him about an hour earlier and had gone in the direction of their home. The man’s home is located on a trail behind the sand pit.
However the father said that he did not take notice of the vehicle and continued to assist his customers.
It was reported that when the car returned, two men existed the car and approached Mohamed. The two who were brandishing handguns, pulled Mohamed out of the vehicle and shot him three times. They then took away his belongings, which included his firearm and matching ammunition, car keys, cell phone, $100,000and escaped.
“Everything happened so fast. By the time I hear de shots I turn and see the men running in the car and my father lying on the ground.”
He picked up his father and rushed him to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre for treatment. However he was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, because of the severity of his injuries.
At the Georgetown Public Hospital concerned relatives flocked the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital awaiting word of Mohamed’s condition.
One relative who wanted to remain anonymous said that the family has an idea of who carried out the brazen attack.
The relative told Kaieteur News that the same suspect was seen in the area earlier, in the same car.
The relative further said that suspect has knowledge of Mohamed’s whereabouts and he also knows that man would have money on his person.
He said that the suspect’s father is known to Mohamed since he had asked to occupy a vacant piece of land behind the sand-pit. The relative further alleged that the suspect is wanted by the police in connection with a murder.
A police press release said that they are continuing investigation, which may lead to possible arrests.
Up to press time the man was in the operating theatre, where doctors were trying to remove the bullets.
