– Flight difficulties, funding major impediments
President of the Guyana Rugby Football Union Noel Adonis in a telephone conversation with Kaieteur Sport yesterday confirmed that Guyana will no longer be attending the Punta Del Este International Sevens Tournament in Uruguay.
Adonis said that the cancellation of the trip was due to two main reasons, citing flight difficulties and insufficient funding as those.
“In the first instance, flights to Uruguay were difficult to get and we were not thinking of alternate travelling because the demands on the players would have been too much,” Adonis disclosed.
He added that the second reason was the lack of sufficient funding since they had to bear in mind that the following month is the IRB World Sevens Series in Las Vegas, Nevada of which Guyana became automatic qualifiers after winning the NACRA Tournament in Mexico.
The Uruguay tournament was to serve as a warm-up for the World Sevens Series.
The Series will be held on February 13-14 at the Sam Boyd Stadium which is home to the UNLV American football team, as well as concerts and other sports competitions throughout the year and has a capacity for 36,800 fans, including club seating and suites. As part of the agreement, a full natural grass pitch will be installed especially for the event.
Meanwhile, Adonis informed that the players short-listed will resume training from today under the guidance of Head Coach Laurie Adonis and his assistant Clinton Clarke at the National Park.
