“We have to step on the gas next year”- says Cadogan
By Edison Jefford
The proposed Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) Christmas Championships scheduled for last weekend was officially cancelled owed to the lack of sponsorship and some other undisclosed factors.
The tournament was expected to supplant the disappointment from the cancellation of the GABA National Super Eight League, which was also ducked because of lack of funding some time early in December.
“We can’t look at that (the Christmas Championships) anymore. It is something that we had considered but we have to focus on January now,” Secretary of the GABA, Robert Cadogan told Kaieteur Sport yesterday.
The back-to-back cancellation of GABA activities placed the association’s performance sheet under tremendous pressure. The association has already been under fire from some quarters for not doing enough developmental work.
Pepsi Sonics among other clubs had criticised the sub-association in the letter pages of this newspaper for its apparent lethargy. The association’s response then, was that it will not descend into the “gutter” with any justification.
“This is our second term in office. We have to step on the gas next year. It has been a learning process so
far. A lot of little things popped up but we tried and will continue to try,” Cadogan said briefly yesterday.
The GABA Secretary indicated that the association is still looking for a permanent place that they can call their home. He said that the absence of that has severely hindered some GABA programmes.
According to Cadogan, a refurbished Burnham Basketball Court will allow the GABA to seriously plan and promote activities outside the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, which is one of those multi-sport facilities and is often in demand.
“We can only do so much. As you know, it’s a lot of work to be done but generally when you take all the things into consideration, I would say yes we had a good year,” Cadogan told this newspaper when asked for his opinion on their performance this year.
The Trevor Rose-led GABA has had a barrage of ideas, but few of them materialised and that has often attracted criticism. The major consensus among those critics is that enough basketball is not being played in Georgetown.
