President Bharrat Jagdeo said that despite the freeing by a United States Federal Court of former Army Major David Clarke on drug related charges, his impression of the former officer has not changed.
The President maintains that he has evidence that indicate Clarke was aiding criminal elements in Buxton while he was stationed there during the Joint Services ‘Operation Tourniquet’.
The former Guyana Defence Force major was freed on time served by a United States Judge, who described him as a remarkable young man.
Clarke had surrendered to US authorities after learning that there was an indictment against him for trafficking in narcotics some three years ago.
He subsequently agreed to be a state witness against convicted drug trafficker Shaheed Roger Khan who is presently serving 15 years in a US prison.
Clarke was also the subject of a witness tampering fiasco which rocked the legal fraternity in New York with the implication of Khan’s high profile attorney Robert Simels.
Simels was sentenced earlier this month to 14 years imprisonment for plotting to eliminate Clarke and members of his family.
However, he will begin serving his sentence on January 8 after the court bowed to pleas of mitigation on behalf of the disgraced attorney.
Clarke, during his sentencing hearing on December 6 told the courts that he was grateful to the United States government for snatching him from the jaws of death in Guyana.
Both he and members of his family have been granted temporary stay in the United States.
At a press conference last Thursday, President Jagdeo was asked for his impression on the recent developments with regards to Clarke. He was reminded of the judge’s comments on Clarke as a remarkable young man.
“My position on him remains the same,” President Jagdeo said.
Following the reported revelations that Clarke aided members of the Buxton/Agricola gang, the officer was by passed for promotion and the President had ordered his withdrawal from an overseas scholarship.
President Jagdeo had also stated that he has video evidence of certain prominent persons meeting with criminals in Buxton.
He had claimed that he could not reveal the video since it would have compromised the source.
But despite the dismantling of the criminal gang, that evidence is still being kept under wraps.
