NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – As the New Year approaches, the Medicine Chest Incorporated of Middle Street, Georgetown has re-committed itself to serve the underprivileged even more.
Speaking to Kaieteur News via telephone last week, Executive Director/Pharmacist of the Medicine Chest Incorporated, Jackie McDonald-Fraser indicated that in 2010 more emphasis would be placed on the distribution of medical supplies for senior citizens.
This year, the entity’s Christmas drive saw dozens of deprived persons from the Berbice and Demerara areas receiving vitamin supplies, toys, articles of clothing, food supplies, books and other paraphernalia. The distribution exercise ended on the eve of Christmas with 15 persons receiving their share of goodies. In addition, this Christmas, more emphasis was placed on homeless people and meals were provided for 25 such persons in both counties.
The Medicine Chest Incorporated started this charitable trust 11 years ago and has since expanded to include the Berbice area. In August, some parents from sections of Demerara and Berbice were given school supplies while others got cash to purchase the stuff.
In October, grocery hampers were handed out to five families. In November medical supplies along with disposable diapers were given to 15 shut-ins.
Mrs. McDonald-Fraser explained that funding for the 2009 charity drive was made possible through the Medicine Chest and her family members.
“This is really the Medicine Chest’s way of saying thanks for the patronage but business is not always as good as we expect it to be. There were some challenges hence my siblings and other relatives all contributed to making our charitable trust a success. Using this method we would now be able to help even more persons.”
In February 2010, one primary school child each in Demerara and Berbice would receive funding for a pair of spectacles.
