A Colin Mack in association with Hits and Jams ‘New York’ concept party at Duke Lodge Saturday night turned out to be a chaotic stampede in Duke Street as hundreds attempted to gain access to the already packed facility.
The party was promoted as the Main Big Lime ‘wash-down’. Partygoers started to make their way to the facility around 11pm as the Lime was teetering off. Initially there was some amount of order outside Duke Lodge but that was only fleeting.
The crowd outside the facility grew astronomically and by midnight, the venue was packed and cramped for space. There was no possibility of accommodating more people inside but it seems as though the crowd outside did not understand that reality.
As a result, many attempted to gain access to Duke Lodge by any means necessary, which also included scaling the fence at some parts and trampling security officials. Things worsened with time as efforts to control the crowd proved futile.
The prestigious image of the facility was heavily threatened with the rowdy behaviour of those who wanted to continue enjoying the festive season. The uncontrollable crowd created havoc in Duke Street when they were prevented access.
Those inside seemed to be not bothered by what was going on outside as the party continued with marijuana smoke dominating some quarters. However, that changed around 1am when the lights were turned on signaling an intention to end the party.
The DJ begged those outside to behave in an orderly manner or else he would be forced to discontinue the proceedings inside. Things apparently calmed down for approximately five or so minutes, and then it got worse with people trying to gain access again.
The lights stayed on and the music was completely turned off, but that only triggered those who had just entered the facility. There contention was that they spent $1000 to get in and they wanted to enjoy their money because they had just arrived inside.
Many protested along those lines and without music and with the lights on, partygoers refused to leave the facility. Those patrons stuck around until they were satisfied that they had spent enough time to commensurate with their entry fee.
