Ex cop held for Crabwood Creek robbery

Freed of murder a week ago…
An ex policeman who was recently freed on a murder charge by a Berbice Magistrate is among the quartet in custody as investigations continue in the daring Wednesday night robbery committed on Crabwood Creek businessman, Ramesh Kalicharran.
Charges are likely soon against the ex-cop and three others, including a serving rank. They are all in custody at the Springlands Police Station as investigators seek the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The men had robbed Kalicharran, 53, of Grant 1805, Crabwood Creek of jewellery worth over $100,000 and $400,000 in cash before escaping.
Kaieteur News understands that the ex-cop was held after he was implicated by the serving policeman who was arrested minutes after the robbery.
According to reports reaching Kaieteur News, two men, one of whom was later identified as the policeman who is stationed at the Central Police Station, had robbed Kallicharran who was in his shop.
The men had entered under the guise of wanting to buy aerated drinks.
However, as Kalicharran was in the process of attending to them, he was handcuffed and ordered to hand over his belongings. The businessman complied after which the men fled. An alarm was raised and quick action by the police led to two men being held in a motorcar at a roadblock at the No.76 Village Public Road, Corentyne.
The two, including the policeman were taken to the Springlands Police Station. The men who were unmasked were identified by the victim as being the men who had robbed him. Further inquiries led to the arrest of the others.
Kaieteur News understands that the Police Constable who also moonlights as a taxi driver is now blaming his former colleague for setting him up.
He had told his family that he was going on a drugs raid up the Corentyne, but claimed that he fell into the robbery trap.
His former colleague, Satish Ragnarine, who hails from Orealla and who was also stationed at the Central Police Station was among three policemen who were implicated in the murder committed on Emron Hoossein, on April 12, 2004.
His matter was discharged by Magistrate Krisendat Persaud in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court a week ago.
Ragnarine had escaped from custody and had fled to Orealla, but was later recaptured and brought to trial.
The other two men who were captured hail from Canje and Skeldon and are well known to the authorities for their notoriety.
