Dec 27, 2009 Letters
Dear Editor,
I refer to the letter caption, “Randy Persaud replies to Freddie Kissoon,” in the December 24th issue of Kaieteur News.
Dr. Persaud objects to certain sections of an article of mine and by extension questions the judgement of the Kaieteur News editor in not editing that particular outlook of mine. The statement in question is from my column titled, “The tyranny of elected dictatorship in Guyana,” (Kaieteur News, December. 21).
Here is a reproduction of the part that scares Dr. Persaud: “As Guyana grew older and as a phantasmagoria of evil policies, autocratic edicts, appalling practices of anti-African racism and unbelievable and incredible levels of corruption enveloped Freedom House, the PPP and the Government of Guyana, no one ever wanted anymore to hear about a bad President named Burnham”. He had become a saint after what they saw the PPP was capable of doing and did.”
In his rejection of my observation, Randy Persaud deliberately left out the last line of Burnham becoming a saint after what the nation saw the PPP doing. I got news for Dr. Persaud. I stick to that opinion. And I do so unapologetically and I can assure him using different juxtaposition of words I will repeat that sentiment again and again.
I believe in what I wrote in that article of December 21, 09. Now Dr. Persaud wanted the Kaieteur News editor to have edited that section of my essay because of the language used. He claimed any responsible editor would have done so
Persaud has now joined Misir in calling on the Kaieteur News editor to show more responsibility. I think the Kaieteur News editor dealt with Misir’s call condignly in an editorial a few months back and we heard nothing further from that quarter.
It is nothing but pure, unadulterated hypocrisy on the part of Misir and Persaud to seek to lecture the Kaieteur News editor when they are both columnists for one of the world’s most obscene and gutter newspapers, the Chronicle.
There is a saying in this land; “Show me your company, I’ll tell you who you are.” To make matters worse, Misir sits on the board that overlooks the Chronicle and the President is the Minister responsible for the state media. The Chronicle is a newspaper that has been brought into the gutter by this regime. Under the Burnham and Hoyte Government such a descent into journalistic miasma would not have taken place.
It is possible that Misir and Persaud write for the Chronicle but don’t read it. Who reads the Chronicle. Not me!
Dr. Persaud wants to know where I stand on the President’s pronouncement on responsible journalism. I do not believe Mr. Jagdeo understands what is responsible journalism, what is professional reporting but most importantly, he doesn’t understand what responsible government is. The President is the ultimate head of the state media which do not practice responsible journalism. The President is the head of a government that does not practice responsible governance.
If we had a population like Jamaica or the US where Persaud works in, and we would have had a Velvet Revolution already in this country where evil policies have destroyed Guyana from Jagan in the 60s to Burnham to Jagdeo, leaving out the Hoyte period
Finally, Persaud has evaded my question. I will repeat it. President Jagdeo called upon the business community to stop placing advertisements as a way of removing the Kaieteur News from the media scene because he thinks that the paper is damaging Guyana’s image and does not operates in the best interest of the country. It appears to me that Persaud did not read the President’s words or listened to the tape. It is morally incongruous for Misir and Persaud to send in their views to Kaieteur News thereby keeping it alive while their boss thinks the paper is not worthy to be in circulation.
Dr. Persaud’s answer as to why he supports the Kaieteur News is evasive to say the least. I am not interested in what the Government tells Persaud to write and not what to write.
My question is how he and Misir can accept Kaieteur New as a paper that should be in circulation when their boss, the President wants it curtailed? It is quite clear that they do not share the same contempt for Kaieteur News as their President has for this newspaper. Is he afraid to say so?
In closing, I call upon Peraud to tell us what his official occupation in Guyana is. In the US, he couldn’t dare avoid such an answer.
Frederick Kissoon
