Prisoners given Christmas day treat…
After a whole year of eating rice and boiled provisions with black tea, inmates at the Georgetown Prison were given a special treat on Christmas Day.
The inmates had been looking forward to the day since they were promised a sumptuous meal, consisting of ingredients mostly produced by the prison farm.
But they soon realised that the sumptuous meal was only by name.
Early Christmas morning, armed with their wares, the prisoners approached the mess hall where they were served with pepper pot and bread and yes, hot water with milk.
Those who do not eat meat were given two slices of bread with peanut butter.
That went down without much fuss and the prisoners anxiously awaited the midday meal.
According to one inmate, the meal was coloured rice with a piece of chicken.
“We ain’t even know if the chicken bake, boil or fry,” one inmate said.
That was washed down with some swank (lime drink).
Next was dinner which consisted of curry with more bread.
That too went down with a glass of swank.
To end the day some prisoners were given two cigarettes each and for those who do not smoke, it was two mints.
At least the meals were far from what they are accustomed throughout the year and many were grateful because unlike those who are on self-support, it was just plain prison food all year round.
“Dem wardens smiling when dey giving we, like if is New Thriving dey giving we,” another prisoner remarked.
The inmates are hoping that come New Year’s Day, things will be a little better although they don’t expect much by way of improvement.
Those who have been in prison for the long haul know better than to complain.
