– murder suspected
Police are probing the suspected murder of a 79-year-old woman, whose body was found outside her Lusignan, East Coast Demerara home at around 05:45 hrs yesterday.
Relatives said that Rajkumar Mahadeo, who tends a small herd of cattle, was discovered by her next door neighbour lying just outside the gateway of her yard.
Her son, Edwin Mahadeo, said that it is suspected that his mother was attacked by persons who were attempting to steal her cows, which were tied in front of her yard.
However, none of the cattle or any of the victim’s valuables appeared to be missing.
“Her (wedding) ring was found on her fingers and the police gave it to us and nothing of value was missing from the house and the cows were not stolen it looks like a spiteful act,” said Mahadeo.
According to her son, he received a phone call from the elderly female neighbour, who told him something appeared to be wrong with his mother, since the gate and entrance to her house were sprawled open.
Mr. Mahadeo lives behind his mothers’ house in a separate yard.
“When I come I see my mother was lying on the ground and she was already dead.” Another relative said that Rajkumar has a son that usually lives with her however; he works on the sea and is not around.
So far, no one has been arrested. A post mortem is expected to be performed on Monday.
The tragedy occurred at a time when several of the Mrs. Mahadeo’s grandchildren had come from overseas to spend the Christmas with her.
According to her daughter, Gaitri Persaud, her mother was excited that one of her other daughters who resides in the US was visiting Guyana on Boxing Day.
Mrs. Mahadeo was scheduled to go on a vacation to the United States with the daughter.
Rajkumar Mahadeo’s husband was slain on June 25, 1973 by persons unknown, while her grandson, Trevor Fung, was slain by robbers on Valentine’s Day 2004.
