The traffic lights at Diamond junction on the East Bank Demerara have started working and officials say that works to widen the roads there will be completed in late January.
The junction, which has been a source of headache for authorities because of the high level of congestion, has been earmarked for a number of works to counter that.
In addition to the widening of the road at the junction, walkways have been added leading to wooden passes on the bridge to the New Diamond and Grove Housing Schemes.
Yesterday, Minister of Public Works and Transport, Robeson Benn, said that the major part of the $19M works will be completed before the end of this year and all finishing touches by January 22, next.
With three banks, a gas station and number of other business under construction, one of Guyana’s largest housing areas is facing congestion problems every morning.
Officials said that the current ongoing works are just a short term measure to ease the situation as plans to build another access road to the scheme are being worked on.
