The Mayor and Council of Georgetown takes this opportunity to extend special Christmas greetings, to its citizens and staff.
This is the time when we celebrate one of the joyous events of the Christian Calendar— Christmas.
This is the period when Christians around the World remember the birth of Jesus the Christ, who gave salvation to all.
Guyanese have a unique way to celebrate this event; giving special gifts, exchanging warm greetings and trying different recipes, in addition to the traditional foods, we relish particularly at this time.
However, the council is urging all citizens to think about the deeper meaning of this event.
Christ came with a mission, a sense of purpose and full knowledge of his role and ultimate destiny.
We, too, have a mission to protect and care our natural, economic, social, cultural and spiritual environment in addition to spread love, goodwill and peace to all mankind.
For centuries, up until today, peace has eluded many Leaders and nations of the World. The lack of it has brought untold suffering to millions of, women and children, strained human communication, and disrupted relations among nation states.
Yet, it is the single-most crucial need in World Society. It is true that the World has made remarkable advances in technologies, the internet and World Wide Web, and various sophisticated technological convergence.
One way by which we can help perpetuate peace is to inculcate a more neighbourly attitude towards those, around us; to be more tolerant to the cultures of others; and respect the law, which provides for the right of every citizen, while share a common bond as human beings, in the grand architect of the universe, and use this to advance the interest and welfare of the city and its populace.
