Both Guyanese in the TCL Group West Indies under-19 twenty-man squad have been named in the 15-man squad to participate in the 2010 U-19 World Cup in New Zealand from next month.
Eighteen-year-old left-handed DCC opening batsman Trevon Griffith, the leading run-scorer in the last TCL regional U-19 three-day competition in Jamaica in July, and 17-year-old West Berbice’s pacer Keon Joseph, the quickest bowler in the same competition, have both predictably been named in the squad which will be led by Jamaica batsman Andre Creary, who did not play in the regional competition due to injury.
Prolific West Indies under-15 right-handed opener Kraigg Brathwaite could open the batting with the attacking Griffith while Jamaican John Campbell is the 3rd opener in the squad named by the Clyde Butts led West Indies selectors this week.
A Vice-Captain has not been named but it is expected that Barbados under-17 and U-19 Skipper Jason Holder, a towering and level headed fast bowling all-rounder with First-Class experience will be named Creary’s deputy.
Little Barbados Keeper Shane Dowrich will do the wicketkeeping duties in a squad which has several all-rounders.
Windward Islands Skipper Dalton Polious, arguably the most naturally talented off-spinner in the last regional youth tournament, is a surprise exclusion from the touring party which is scheduled to depart the Caribbean on December 30.
West Indies are in group ‘D’ with Papua New Guinea, Pakistan and Bangladesh and they face Pakistan on January 15 in the opening match.
The regional colts will play a warm-up match against Australia U-19s on January 11 before facing Ireland in their other warm-up game the next day. The Windies failed to reach the semi-finals of the last U-19 World Cup in Malaysia which was won by India last year.
The team will be managed by former West Indies senior team Manager Trinidadian Omar Khan and Coached by former Jamaica Wicketkeeper Andre Coley.
West Indies U-19 squad:-Andre Creary (captain), Jermaine Blackwood, Nelson Bolan, Kraigg Brathwaite, John Campbell, Yannic Cariah, Akeem Dewar, Shane Dowrich, Nicholson Gordon, Trevon Griffiths, Jason Holder, Keon Joseph, Evin Lewis, Yannick Ottley, Jomel Warrican.
