Although two mobile generators are in operation on the West Coast of Demerara, residents are still experiencing a spate of power outages. This has been ongoing for two days in a row, and according to reports, the ‘blackouts’ are due to a shortfall in generation.
Reports reaching Kaieteur News stated that on Tuesday last the West Coast Demerara residents suffered a power outage from 8:00 hrs until approximately 21:00hrs.
But this was not the end of the situation, as shortly after receiving power again, a number of communities were plunged into darkness.
According to residents, the power was ‘on and off’ for the entire night. On Wednesday morning, it was the same problem, as the power went off from 5:00 hrs until 9:30 hrs.
Some residents expressed their dissatisfaction with the actions of the Guyana Power and Light Company (GPL) which had promised a ‘blackout free Christmas.’
On December 10, Kaieteur News had reported that two mobile generators were scheduled to be in operation at Leonora in order to ease the power woes of West Demerara.
Chairman of the power company, Winston Brassington, had explained to this newspaper that back in October when the company was hit by outages, two Wartsila engines scheduled for overhaul had to be used overtime to meet demands.
Additionally, the official said, one of the new Wartsila engines at Kingston was out of operation and was awaiting a part.
