The respective winners of this year’s Banks DIH Tropical Mist Invitational Masters Tennis Tournament received their prizes last Tuesday evening in the Oasis Room of the Pegasus Hotel.
The occasion saw in attendance current and past executive members of the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) including President Christopher Ram, Banks DIH representatives Troy Peters and Errol Nelson, CEO of Pegasus Robert Badal and well wishers.
Speaking at the ceremony, GLTA Secretary Grace McCalman commended long serving supporters of the sport among them being Banks DIH whose involvement in the game dates back to over 30 years, Pegasus Hotel, P&P Insurance Brokers and Nigel’s Supermarket.
According to McCalman each one of those entities are very special to the GLTA, adding that without the permission to use Pegasus Hotel, it would be difficult to suggest where tennis might be today in the absence of other facilities. They were each presented with plaques along with Kaieteur News Sports Journalist Rawle Welch for their outstanding support to the sport.
Peters in his remarks acknowledged that it was indeed an honour to receive such an award on behalf of the Company and further pledged its support for the sport.
He extended best wishes for a Merry Christmas to all on behalf of the Board of Directors, Management and Staff.
Badal opened by informing that his personal presence was indicative of the manner in which he views the sport and the development of sport. He too related that it was indeed a credit to the Hotel to be recognised for its support, especially when it is geared to benefit so many young individuals.
Badal reminded that even though the Hotel is under new ownership, the change would in no way affect its support and felt that the sport has a long way to go taking into consideration the quality of leadership that currently exists. He urged the new executive to organise a Guyana Open Competition which should include players from the Caribbean and perhaps further a-field.
“The GLTA have to take its sights to the highest level and instead of a Pegasus Open and a Banks Invitational Masters Tournament, we could discuss a merger between the two entities and bring off a Guyana Open,” Badal advised.
He referred to the accomplishments of Usain Bolt, whose world class performances have now translated to huge success for him and country.
Meanwhile, Marian Academy was also presented with a plaque for its involvement and the promotion of mini-tennis within the school.
