Authorities have announced new requirements for speedboat from January 1, 2010. One of them is compulsory lifejackets.
A notice by the Maritime Administration Department yesterday said that requirements would hold for all small passenger boats operating in Corentyne, Pomeroon, Moruca, Kaituma, Waini, Barima, Berbice, Canje, Mahaica, Mahaicony, Abary, Demerara and Essequibo Rivers and its tributaries.
According to the 10-point notice, boats with flat bottoms will not be allowed to operate.
All vessels are to be outfitted with a lifebuoy and attached lifeline and there should be adequate life jackets for each adult and no less than three for children.
Additionally, the small passenger boats are to carry first aid kits, one waterproof VHF radio and a mobile phone.
Before each trip a list of the passengers is to be submitted to a representative of the owner/operator, the notice said.
“Bouyancy compartments of sufficient strength and size are to be securely fitted to fill the void space under every seat under the forecastle (bow) between the transom and after bulkhead.”
Additionally, loading marks are to be placed on each side of the vessel, while the minimum freeboard of the vessel in the loaded condition will have to be 10 inches.
