Ever since the services of Strategic Security Services were taken over by the RK Security Services on November15, last, through an intervention by the government, security guards on the Essequibo Coast, who previously worked for the former and who have been transferred to RK, are seeking to be retained by the former entity.
Yesterday, a number of security guards complained of being underpaid and also physically and verbally abused by their commander in charge.
All of the guards have complained of being underpaid for both November and December this year, while others have said they haven’t received any monies for this month.
One female guard, Lolita Kumar, of Reliance Village, Essequibo Coast, said she devoted 25 years of her life working as a security guard and had started out receiving pay cheques of $20,000 per month while she was employed with the Strategic Security.
She said that he rate of pay was $117 an hour.
This month she only received $3,020 working for RK Security Services.
The frustrated woman opined that this is the festive season and with that limited money she can’t do much.
Another guard, Mrs. Alphonso, said she is presently stationed at the Regional Guest House at Anna Regina, having started working in 1986. This month she received only $2000. She also said that her young daughter, Tawana Alphonso, who was also an employee of Strategic Security firm for the last nine years, came home in tears as she complained of only receiving a pay cheque of $2000.
All the guards who are presently with RK security firm have unionized themselves under the umbrella of the General Workers’ Union with the intention of making representation on behalf of their fellow workers. They all said that they are all prepared to go to the full length.
