GDF clash with Seawall FC; BK Int. Western Tigers face Victoria Kings
As the saying goes, it’s getting better all the time. That the 20th edition of the Annual Kashif and Shanghai Football tournament which will see the group-of-16 play concluding this evening with the winners booking the final two quarter final spots.
And fans could not have asked for a better line up this evening at the GFC ground when the Guyana Defense Force engage West Demerara’s Seawall United in eth first game from 18″:00hrs with the main event featuring BK International Western Tigers who will throw down the gauntlet to East Demerara’s Victoria Kings.
These final two group-of-16 games will set the tone for the remainder of the tournament as the quarter final line ups are already beginning to send the pundits into deep thinking.
So far, Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United have booked a date with Fruta Conquerors on Boxing Day at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground while Bakewell Topp XX will match skills with the winner of the Western Tigers/Victoria Kings clash.
On Christmas Day, Friday, defending Champions Pele oppose the victor of the GDF/Seawall FC affair while Sunburst Camptown will be challenged by Dark Horses Riddim Squad.
But the attention will be focused on tonight’s match-ups at the GFC ground. The main event between Western Tigers and Victoria will see the West based city team aiming to fire on all cylinders and will be led in this regard by nippy and tormenting forward Devon Millington who will operate alongside United Kingdom based and long standing Tiger, Shawn Beveney.
While Victoria has already played one game and are prepared with regard to match fitness with their come from behind 3-1 win over New Amsterdam United, Western will fancy their chances of going all the way this time around and are confident of doing so.
Millington and Beveney will be supported by another veteran Eron Hayde, Cpatian Dellon Fraser, Sherman David, Dwayne Ali, Ola Pedro, Chad Fernandes, Colin Nelson, Dellon Fraser, Philip Rowley, Ryan Thomas, Maxwell Pellew, Renault Fraser, Rolex Scott, Suriname based Anthony Abrams and Leon Jarvis among others.
Victoria’s bid to advance further will be carried by Trinidad and Tobago based goalie Andrew Durant, Kwesi De Souza, Aubrey Gibson, Rashleigh Morrison, Tichard Joseph, Kerron Phillips, Pierre Joseph, Winston Pompey, Orin Elias, Calvin De Souza and Kojo Huntley.
While this prestigious championship has eluded the Tigers, the Kings won in 2001/2002 and were finalists in 1998/1999 when they lost to Trinidad and Tobago’s Doc’s Khelawlaas.
Opening play at 18:00hrs pits the Guyana Defense Force and Seawall FC. The Army side has reinforced their side with the inclusion of four T&T Pro League players in strikers and Kelvin Carter and Devon Jorsling who ended as the 3rd highest goal scorer in this year’s Pro League. Defenders David Alleyne and Alcile Edwards all of the T&T Army team have also been added to the local Army side.
They will link up in combat with Stellon David, Royon Morrison, Delroy Deen, Akel Clarke, Selwyn Isaacs, Keon Adams, Warren Gilkes, Marlon Benjamin, Seon Brewley, Shavane Seaforth, Eusi Phillips, and Desford Williams.
Going all the way according to Head Coach Marlon Washington is the aim of the GDF this time around.
Seawall will look to their tested, tried and proven stalwarts to carry their victory bid. Marvin Joseph, Darvis Garraway, Clement Brown, Michael Castello, Toine Lopes, Delon Josiah, Delon layne, Zevon Atkinson, Ulric Griffith, Adami Hoyte, Algernol Scott, Gideon Payne, Gadi Hoyte, Garlon Lewis and Ruel Delon will all combine efforts as they seek a quarter final place.
They won their first game against Linden’s Rusal last Wednesday at the same venue by a 2-1 margin and will be seeking to return to similar form against the Army this evening.
