As the end of the year dawns, executives if the Cavalier Sports and Tour Club (CSTC) are basking in their accomplishments and coordinator, Ms. Olga Harry is adamant that 2009 has been an extremely good year for the sport. She further predicted an equally successful 2010 while outlining some of the plans for the development of local race walkers.
Some of these plans encompass the broadening of the awareness of the sport and one of the ploys being currently considered is an introduction into the school system. Administrators are also mulling the idea of incorporating the sport in the University of Guyana.
Several other initiatives have also been considered and if the executive of the CSTC gets their way, the sport would form an integral part of several institutions including Government Ministries and other agencies, youth and women’s clubs, trade union organizations and churches among other entities.
Ms. Harry further disclosed that her organization has recently finalized arrangements with the United States Race Walk Foundation which would lead to local race walkers competing in that country among some of the best in the sport. The local organization would also benefit from gears and training modules from the International Organization.
She lamented the absence of adequate sponsorship for the sport but boasted that organizers were still able to forge ahead with plans. “We have been able to stage over thirty successful races countrywide as well as host our fifth ‘Month of Race Walk Activities’ during August last,” Ms. Harry said. She also pointed out that the efforts of her administrators have seen the resurgence of the sport as well as a plethora of emerging talent.
Ms. Harry lauded the input of the Corporate Community as well as other hard-working individuals which she describes as the catalyst to the achievements of the local race walkers. Among those coming in for high praise are Public Service Minister, Dr. Jennifer Webster, General Manager of the Guyana Beverage Company, Robert Selman, and Managing Director of Modern Optical Services, Jose DaSilva among others.
Two journalists, Michael Benjamin of the Kaieteur News and Jermaine Carter of the National Communications Networks have also been singled out for commendations.
The CSTC has planned a function where successful race walkers would be rewarded for their efforts throughout the year. The two media operatives would also receive special tokens.
