Promoter forced to postpone boxing card as ‘Season’s Beatings’ takes a beating

The highly touted light/heavyweight boxing match between Gwendolyn ‘Stealth Bomber’ O’Neil and Lindener, Sharon Warde has been postponed for what promoter Carwyn Holland describes as poor corporate support. However, he has hinted at a new date sometime next month once he receives the requisite permission from the Guyana Boxing Board of Control.

However, Holland’s optimism may not transfer into success since another promoter, head of the McNeal Enterprise Promotions, Odinga Lumumba, has already tied down a date in January to stage the Rawle Frank/Andrew Lewis middleweight clash. Holland said that he spoke with President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Peter Abdool concerning the postponement but the Boxing Board head could not definitively promise to accommodate the card as early as next month. Up to press time Holland was still awaiting word pertaining to the earliest date available for the card.

In the interim, former Women’s World International Boxing Association (WIBA) light/heavyweight champion, Gwendolyn ‘Stealth Bomber’ O’Neil touched down at the Cheddie Jagan International Airport, Timerhi last Sunday night to keep her ring date while Ward, who is currently undergoing a training stint in Russia, is expected home sometime this week.

Meanwhile, O’Neil opened camp at the Andrew ‘Sixheads’ Lewis Boxing Gym Albouystown, Monday afternoon last. She said that she has not been notified of any changes in plans and so decided to continue training sessions. “I came here to fight and I am preparing until I receive official word that there is no fight,” O’Neal said.

The former WIBA champion who migrated to the USA some seven months ago explained that she has been engaged in intensive training sessions at the Kid Kelly Boxing Gym, Liberty Avenue, Brooklyn, under the expert tutelage of an American popularly known as Rahim. She said that Holland had informed her of the bout a few months ago and urged her to commence preparations.

O’Neil said that her initial training regiment consisted of approximately sixty rounds a day inclusive of shadow boxing, heavy bag work, pads work, skipping and other extensive work.

She said that she has recently reduced her workload and expects to be firmly in shape whenever the fight is staged. O’Neil further said that she has recently received an offer to fight for the Women’s International World Boxing Council Light/heavyweight title.

The fight is scheduled for New York. With this in mind she is not certain if she could accommodate a postponement of the fight. In the meantime, the traditional Boxing Day card seems to be in jeopardy.
