She said that last Tuesday his condition worsened and family members decided to take him to a doctor. She said that after a thorough examination the doctor advised that he be admitted. She said that despite the strenuous efforts of doctors, her son passed away on Sunday morning last.
The senior Aubrey said that his son’s death is indeed tragic. He remembers the early days when his son became interested in the sport.
“Aubrey wanted to be a goalkeeper but a little incident changed his mind.” He further explained that his son, while practicing his trade in a game of street football, incurred a serious gash which immediately changed his goalkeeping ambitions.
This experience, while quelling his desire to operate between the uprights, certainly did not affect his ambition of being a footballer and at a tender age of 17 years he was drafted into the national team.
His mother remembers him as a devoted son who loved football very much. She said that during the latter days of his illness her son apparently became delirious and mumbled that he was scheduled to play a game on Thursday.
Despite being in his twilight years he continued to actively pursue his trade and last donned national colours two months ago when he played for the All Stars team when they competed in the National West Masters tournament in October last.
During our visit to Thompson’s residence we noted that most of the family members were reminiscing on his past exploits. There were no tears, but tears are not the only indication of grief. The family chose instead to demonstrate love, recounting his past exploits. Nearby, several trophies line a specially built shelf on the wall. It served as a reminder of the many exploits of a man who had loved the game he played and demonstrated that love through the acquisition of numerous accolades. Thompson also represented local club side Santos with a high degree of efficiency during his career as a club player.
The staff of Kaieteur News wishes to relay heartfelt sympathy to his sorrowing relatives and all those who may have been affected by his demise.
