Half centuries from Meten Meer Zorg B Sheldon Alexander and Vivian Beckles of Independence along with hat-tricks from Arshad Alli (3-16) and Satesh Teaknauth (5- 6) highlighted the latest action in the Barakat Brothers Twenty20 knockout cricket competition in West Demerara over the weekend.
Atree Singh (4-15) for Meten-Meer-Zorg B, David Albert (4-10) of Independence, Hemraj Persaud (4-5) of Satro and Rakesh Goberdhan (4-12) of Meten Meer Zorg were also among the competition’s latest top performers.
On Saturday at Cornelia Ida (CI), Jasper United beat Vergenoegen by 7 wickets. Vergenoegen scored 94-8 in 20 overs, Michael Goberdhan top scored with 26. Bowling for Jasper United Roydel Benjamin had 2-9 for Jasper United who replied with 95-3 in 19.3 overs, Lennox Andrew stroked 37.
Also on Saturday at Meten Meer Zorg West, the host got past Leonora by 25 runs after scoring a challenging 158-5 in their 20 overs. Sheldon Alexander hit an unbeaten 50, Surendar Ragunauth 25, Ashim Bashir 24 and Arshad Alli 21.
Hemendra Kowlessar with 2-20 was the best bowler for Leonora who were bowled out for 133 in 18.3 overs. Mahendra Persuad led with 37, Rajin Rahaman 27 and Ravindra Ramnarine 17. Bowling for the winners, Atree Singh grabbed 4-15 and received support from right-arm medium pacer Alli who got 3-16.
Former national youth keeper Ejaz Asgarally also helped to set up victory by effecting two smart stumping for Meten Meer Zorg B on Sunday at CI as Independence beat the host by 7 wickets to reach the final four.
Batting first, Meten Meer Zorg B could only muster 115-6 in 20 overs; Nigel Vieira struck 34 and Bisram Thomas 26.
David Allert, 4-10 bowled well as Independence reached 116-3 with one over to spare; Vivian Beckles smashed 4 fours and a six in a well put together 50. Kishan Shivgobin backed up with 43; Ameer Khan had figures of 2-23.
On Sunday at Meten Meer Zorg West, defending champions Meten Meer Zorg A crushed Windsor Forest by 9 wickets to reach the semi final.
Windsor Forest who were 35-2 after 4 overs at one stage, fell for 69. Muneshwar Balgobin made 17. Former national Under-19 players Rakesh Goberdhan (4-12) and Avinash Shradananda (3-3) did the damage with the ball and in reply, the host raced to 70-1 off 7.2 overs. Mahendra Nandkishore topped with 36 and Bander Shivpersaud 33 in leading their team to victory.
Also on Sunday at Whyte’s ground Leguan, Satro Sports Club defeated Sunrise by 55 runs to reach the semis; the game was reduced to 10 overs due to rain.
Satro posted 98-6 with Muneshwar Jattan stroking 30; Teaknauth grabbed 5-26 for Sunrise who in response were sent packing for 55 in 9.5 overs. Teaknauth returned with the bat to score 17 in a losing cause while Hemraj Persaud accounted for 4 wickets at a miserly coast of 5 runs.
The competition continues this weekend with All Youths taking on Jasper United at CI on Saturday, December 26. The winner of this match will play Meten Meer Zorg B on Sunday at Meter Meer Zorg West from 09.30 hrs.
The winner of this encounter will then meet Satro in the semi final the same day from 13:15 hrs, Independence will also play host Meten Meer Zorg A in the first semi final on Saturday 26 from 13:15 hrs.
The final is set for January 3 from 09:30hrs at Meten Meer Zorg West and this match will be followed by a Twenty20 encounter from 13:15hrs between Barakat Brothers All Star and New Line Cavaliers.
