Guyana Defence Force solider, Junior Talbot, of 82 Middle Walk, Buxton, was on Friday released on $300,000 bail on two counts of carnal knowledge.
The accused made his appearance before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the New Amsterdam. Talbot who was based at the Army base in New Amsterdam, Berbice, is accused of having sex with the minor at the base in New Amsterdam.
Prosecuting police inspector Satrohan Dayaram objected to bail on the grounds of the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence.
Dayaram said that as a military personnel Talbot should have known better. The girl telling him she is over 16 is not enough to go and have sex with her the prosecutor continued. “She telling you her age doesn’t give you legal consent,” he quipped.
Attorney at Law Charrandass Persaud, who represent the accused, said that the incident is an unfortunate one and stems from the brazenness of the virtual complainant. He said that it was she who chased after the accused and identified the locations where the alleged incidents took place. He further reminded the Court that the offence is a bailable one and said that the entire incident has already caused his client his job.
After listening to both sides the magistrate then ordered Talbot to post $150,000 bail on each of the charges. He is to today.
