The President of one of Guyana’s oldest and most vibrant Road Safety Associations has called on road users to ensure that this Christmas season is celebrated without the loss of lives on the country’s roads.
Chandrapaul Persaud made the appeal during the annual Christmas dinner of the Enterprise Road Safety Association.
A young resident of the village hands over the cheque to the longest serving member of the Enterprise Road Safety Association.
According to Persaud, it is customary for people to partake in the drinking of alcohol. However he reminded that most accidents are caused by excessive drinking.
And although there were lots to eat and drink at the dinner, members of the Road Safety Association were keen to set the example by leaving their vehicles home.
This year has seen a slight increase in road fatalities compared with 2008, with many accidents resulting from persons driving under the influence of alcohol.
However, it is expected that the incidence of drunk driving will be reduced with the implementation of breathalysers.
Over the years, the Enterprise Road Safety Association, which was formed 40 years ago, has been in the forefront of promoting road safety.
They have been working along with the National Road Safety Council as well as the Police Traffic Department especially the East Coast Demerara Division to make the roads safer.
The occasion also saw the handing over of a cheque for $85,000 from the Enterprise Support group of the USA.
Mr. Bissoon Singh delivered the cheque on behalf of USA-based Enterprise resident, Amar Persaud.
He said that many Guyanese overseas have conveyed their admiration for the work being done by the association and have expressed their interest to assist.
“The cheque here shows clearly their interest in having this organization sustained at all cost,” Singh said.
He made mention of Mr. Cecil Narine who is the son of one of the association’s founding members, who has expressed his interest in assisting the group.
According to Singh, the US-based Enterprise residents are aware of the constraints of running a non-governmental organization with scarce funds, since most of the members volunteer their time to ensure its viability.
