Victoria Kings 3 New Amsterdam 1; Riddim Squad 2 Rosignol 1
By Franklin Wilson
The pride of Berbice Football, Rosignol United and New Amsterdam United were both sent packing from the 20th edition of the Kashif and Shanghai football tournament which continued at the Blairmont Community Centre ground on Sunday evening.
What both teams shared in common apart from defeat, was the fact that they both drew first blood but were unable to stem the flow of goals thereafter from the opposing teams.
Battling in the feature game, Riddim Squad continued their fairytale run as they rebounded from the loss of Sherwin Hope in the 36th minute to a knee injury and being a goal down in the 42nd, to squeeze past Rosignol United by the odd goal in three.
Opening action saw the last East Coast team standing in the competition and one-time Kashif and Shanghai champs, Victoria Kings, easing their way to a commanding 3-1 triumph over New Amsterdam United.
The feature game started at a brisk pace with the home team controlling the contest. They {Rosignol} looked very threatening with their quick and controlled style of play; Riddim Squad who turned back the challenge of Ann’s Grove in their first game took some time to settle but gradually got into their groove.
The first goal was always on the cards for Rosignol who indeed dominated their opponents, three minutes to the half time break Olvis Mitchell sent his team ahead with a well directed shot that hit the inside of the near post before settling at the back of the nets. Rosignol 1, Riddim Squad 0. In the second half, it was a different game as the tables turned drastically, it was Riddim Squad who were the dominant team with most of the play concentrated in Rosignol’s half of the field. The home team it seemed went home after the first half.
Five minutes into the half, the Mocha based Riddim Squad won a free kick just outside the area on the right side of goal. One of five (5) Hope brothers in the Riddim Squad team stepped up to take the shot which resulted in them drawing even.
With their rhythm finally going and Rosignol’s definite lack of passion in this half, it was only a matter of time before Riddim Squad nailed the go ahead goal and that they did with 8 minutes to full time. Like they did in the Ann’s Grove encounter, it was the combination of the Hope brothers that saw them to another win.
It was Sheldon whose 82nd minute shot sailed into the nets for yet another sound and solid win for Riddim Squad who will now face Sunburst Camptown on Saturday evening for a place in the semi-finals.
Victoria Kings, who battled New Amsterdam United in the first game and sport new uniforms compliments of Giftland Office Max, downed the latter 3-1 coming back from a goal down. Colin Bowry sent the team from the East into the lead 10 minutes into the game which was dominated by the host team in the early stages.
Goalkeeper Andrew Durant who campaigns in Trinidad and Tobago was beaten all ends up by Bowry who wriggled his way past the Kings’ defence. This encounter was briefly halted when one of the stanchions with lights developed some problems and went out.
Both teams took the 10-15 minute period to regroup and on resumption it took some time for them to resettle again. The Kings found the equalizer just before the half time whistle when veteran Pierre Joseph found the space to shoot with great accuracy in the 42nd minute. Joseph saw the keeper way off his goal line and curled the ball to the far post. The go ahead goal was netted by Tichard Joseph in the 64th minute from the penalty spot while Aubrey Gibson put the game out of the reach of New Amsterdam when he converted in the 67th minute.
Victoria Kings will now face BK International Western Tigers tomorrow at the GFC ground for a place in the quarter-finals against Bakewell Topp XX on Boxing Day at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground. The other game tomorrow at the same venue kicking off at 18:30hrs brings together the Kings and Western Tigers.
