Beat Shiriri twice in 2-match final
A fair sized crowd watched as Snatchers beat Shiriri in both of their home and away final of the inaugural Rupununi Football Association (FA) senior male league on Friday and Sunday respectively in Region 9.
Snatches got past Gladiators in their final preliminary round game to join Snatchers at the top of the points table on 15 points and book their place in the final.
Both Snatchers and Gladiators (10 points) required a final round win to get into the finals of the 8-team competition which commenced on July 24.
In steaming hot conditions at the Lethem ground, Rondell Fitzpatrick (15
th minute) and Seon George (40th minute) gave Snatchers a 2-nill win before Snatches confirmed their status as the best team in the tournament with a 3-1 victory in the 2nd final at the St. Ignatius ground.
Watched by a crowd of about 80 fans, Shiriri tightened their defensive play and kept the opposition’s strikers at bay for 48 minutes until a goal from George, 3 minutes into the 2
nd half put Snatchers in front.
Fitzpatrick then fired in 2 goals in the space of 2 minutes after giving Snatches a 2-nill lead with the first his ‘double’ in the 57
th minute.
Aloysius Eusebio kicked in a consolation goal in the 83
rd minute for the runner-up side and plans are already in place for the 2nd annual competition which will start in July next year.
