On the night of Monday last at approximately 22:30 hrs, 38-year-old Sharon Fung and 36-year-old Alwin Clark had a heated argument that led to two of Fung’s daughters arming themselves with an old cricket bat and a rolling pin to defend their mother.
According to Fung, a Stabroek Market vendor, Clark, the father of two of her children, armed himself with a saw and chopped 16-year-old Christine Dick on her right hand. After injuring the teen the man fled the 27 Coldingen Road, East Coast Demerara house with Fung in hot pursuit.
Clark was subsequently arrested the same night by police, with much help from Fung. He was taken to the Vigilance Police Station and locked up. Meanwhile, Dick was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where she immediately underwent surgery to save her hand.
They must have released Clark soon after.
Yesterday morning, however, Clark appeared in the home again; Fung called the police and was told that they could not hold Clark any longer. “They can’t hold him in the lock-up six days suffering,” is what Fung said the police told her of Clark’s release. She chased the man out of her house.
She subsequently visited the Vigilance Police Station and “get on bad”. Fung said that that she was eventually calmed down by an Inspector and the head of the Criminal Investigations Department at the station.
She said that she was informed that the extent of the seriousness of the attack was not conveyed to them and as such they took no serious action.
Fung was at a loss as to why no proper investigations were done after her daughter got attacked. Kaieteur News understands that no statements were taken from Fung or anyone who witnessed the attack, and that no police rank visited the child in the hospital to make a report on her condition.
According to Fung, the right-handed child’s injury is so severe that she may not be able to function properly in school, and as such, may miss out on her education for a short while. She was also told that her daughter may need to have steel placed in her arm in order to save it and so that it may be able to function properly.
“It’s not fair,” complained the mother, who is currently putting all her earnings into the completion of her home and in the care of her children. She said that she is not afraid of Clark, but all she is seeking is a full and fair investigation into the attack of her daughter, so that Clark may feel the full extent of the law for his actions.
