128 runs in final at Bourda

Berbice side Corentyne District produced a clinical performance to crush West Demerara District in Friday’s final of the Guyana Cricket Board/Ministry of Education National Inter-Secondary School under-15 Cricket competition at Bourda.
Watched by a handful of spectators in sweltering heat, the Region 6 side reached 225-8 off their allotted 40 overs after electing to bat on a flat track and fast outfield.
They then dismissed the Demerara unit for 97 despite a fluent unbeaten 40 from left-hander Arvin Seepersaud who reached the boundary twice in his 51-ball innings before he ran out of partners.
With three Berbice under-15 players in their team and an unblemished record in the competition since they beat New Amsterdam District in their opening game, Corentyne got solid contributions from Man-of-the-Match Shailendra Shameer (74), Parmanand Narine (50) and national under-15 player Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai (30) to set them on course for championship honours after beating East Coast District in the national quarter-finals and North Georgetown in the semis.
Nazimul Bux (12) added 44 for the first wicket with Narine, who hit 6 fours in his even fifty, before Bux was bowled by Rafeek Nazier in the 8th over. Shawn Pereira (7) was then run out at 59-2 before Narine and Shameer put together 47 for the 3rd wicket.
Narine was eventually caught off Michael Mathura, cutting to point to leave the score on 108-3.
Shameer, who played an array of audacious shots, dominated the 4th wicket stand of 52 with Ruel Leitch who made 11.
Shameer, who struck 11 fours in his innings, was taken at backward point off Chandrika Persaud at 177-5 before the pint-size Moti-Kanhai hit 4 fours in a cameo 30 before he was stumped off of Malcolm Hubbert at 214-6.
Persaud (2-29) and Mathura (2-29) were the main wicket takers for West Demerara who were never in the contest despite the spirited batting from Seepersaud once Khanhaya Ramkarran (1) was removed by Manoj Looknauth at 7-1.
Mathura batted well at the top of the order for 27 but apart from the stylish Seepersaud who drives the ball sweetly through the off-side, the West Demerara batting lacked firepower and Moti-Kanhai (3-23) confused the batsmen with his left-arm back-of-the-hand spin. Off-spinner David Latchaya (2-9) and leg-spinner Pereira (2-33) bowled their team to a convincing win.
