The new track at Port Mourant Turf Club that was laid for ‘Grass Track’ racing last week is in good condition ahead of tomorrow’s Titan Entertainment Second Showdown in their Championship Grass Track Racing Series.
“This is virgin territory for Grass Track Racing in Port Mourant – a community that is also known for Horseracing. I am a former professional rider and I think this [track] is good for racing,” Titan’s Sheik Yaseen said Thursday.
The Entertainment Group had hosted the media on a field trip to the facility for a pointed view of the new track. Yaseen and Promoter, Stanley Rampersaud both indicated that the facility will be the home of international racing.
“Rampersaud was very instrumental in letting the Committee [at the Turf Club] know the benefits of Grass Track racing. He let them know that this is a sport that the community is going to enjoy. It is a track to enjoy,” Yaseen noted.
The Titan Entertainment Executive informed that the track was constructed with the long-term view of hosting international meets from as early as next year when Suriname, T&T, Brazil and French Guiana arrives for a competition.
“There are not very many tracks that are so big and flat. Hampton Court has grass, which perhaps the only difference. This track is bigger than Ogle as well, which is the mecca of Grass Track racing in Guyana,” Yaseen continued.
The track sits on approximately 20,000 square feet of land and has a circumference that is more circular as opposed to the conventional oval shape tracks. “Hundreds of thousands, if not a million, was spent on this track,” he disclosed.
Asked about the community’s response to Grass Track racing, Rampersaud’s opinion was that close to 10,000 people will turn out to witness the event. He said that there is parking within the facility to accommodate everyone inside.
“I think it will be accepted well and we are looking at a huge crowd. Since I came back to Guyana from Toronto I went to about three race meetings in Berbice and the response has always been very well,” Rampersaud assessed.
“I’ve done a lot of promotions, including flood lights cricket at Albion and I believe that this event will be very well accepted here. I believe that the track is ready,” Rampersaud said, adding that it is time for something new there.
Titan Entertainment had hosted the First Meeting at Hampton Court in Essequibo where a number of top riders thrilled thousands of patrons. The Second Race meeting tomorrow is expected to accomplish similar results at Port Mourant.
