The Kennard Memorial Turf Club recently dedicated a pavilion in memory of a late president of the club Deo Kharag.
Kharag, who hails from Bush Lot, was president of the club for some 20 years from 1955 to 1975, was responsible for the transformation of the club from an ordinary race track to one of the better racing entities in the country, according to former Chancellor of the Judiciary, Chairman of the Police Complains Authority and Honorary Club President, Justice Cecil Kennard.
Mr. Kennard was speaking at the ceremony which was held recently at their Bush Lot Farm, Corentyne Coast location.
Looking aback at the history of the club, the former Chancellor gave brief information of the race track which is named after his late father and the contributions of Kharag and others.
He said that the club started in the early 1930 and apart from the Port Mourant Racetrack, it is the oldest surviving race course in the country. He traced back to 1955 when the entity was almost bankrupt and was levied upon and that was the time when Mr. Kharag entered the picture. His presence was felt instantly, as he was a man of his word and matched his words with action. From then the entity moved from strength to strength.
Deo Kharag was a businessman who was integrally involved in his community and apart from his exploits in the horseracing arena he was a very good cricketer.
Mr. Kennard rolling back the year’s and speaking with a deep sense of nostalgia spoke of their days together as youths growing up and their success story although in different fields, and also mentioned the sterling contributions of another former President Mankarran Singh after whom the main pavilion is named and present president Roopnarine Matadial called ‘Shines’ who received a plaque for his contribution.
Deo Kharag later migrated and became a successful businessman overseas. The Kharag family is the owners of the Metro Business and Office supplies and computer stores in Guyana and USA and has contributed immensely to community development in Guyana.
Apart from helping with the development of the Kennard Memorial Turf Club, they have completely redone the Kennard Memorial Cricket Ground and given millions of dollars in donations to schools in Guyana especially in Berbice.
Speaking on behalf of the family, son Ron Ramnarayan owner of Metro said that the family is extremely humbled to be present at such an occasion where their late father is being honoured. He said that they feel good that they are able to give back to society especially the communities that they came from and one must always remember their roots.
The businessman said that their father despite his success was a humble man and they continue in the same vein and that is what is breeding success. They will always continue to assist in what ever way they could.
Pastor Quesi Henry said a prayer to bless the stand, before the curtains were removed by Kharag two daughter Chitra and Babita to unveil the sign with the name of the stand.
